Play areas have come a long way since the rusty old swings of our youth and now kids can enjoy everything from well designed obstacle courses to sporty fun, bouncy pillows and wooden castles. Dotted around our county, you can often find great free ones in our parks and residential areas, but there are also a few paid-for options at tourist attractions that are worth the entrance fee for a nice and tiring day out.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-1-godstone-farm-godstone">1. Godstone Farm, Godstone</h2>



WHAT: The outdoor play areas at <a href="https://surrey.muddystilettos.co.uk/little-black-book/directory/godstone-farm/">Godstone Farm</a> are sprawling and vast with lovely spots for parents to sit and keep watch while the kids burn off some ice-cream energy. The adventure playground has sand pits, zip wires, slides and climbing walls. <h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-2-priory-park-reigate">2. Priory Park, Reigate</h2>



WHAT: This lovely park in the town centre is home to lakes, tennis courts, football and multi-sport courts, a skatepark, picnic area and café, but the play area is where it’s at. Recently refurbished, kids can enjoy a large pirate ship, sensory play and a splash area with water features which usually operate from May to October (weather dependent).

WHAT: Guildford&#8217;s largest park with Green Flag Award winning status has plenty of beautiful open green space, a fully-equipped children&#8217;s playground, skate park, paddling pool, boating pond and mini-golf course. The play area features swings, a slide, helter-skelter, springers, whizzer and multi-play. There is also a paddling pool open during summer season.

WHAT: Two sites to choose from here &#8211; the original <a href="https://surrey.muddystilettos.co.uk/little-black-book/directory/hobbledown-epsom-hounslow/">Hobbledown</a> is based on a 50-acre site at Epsom. It’s a fabulous and fun day out for the family with plenty to keep everyone entertained whatever the weather. Visit the farm and zoo, indoor play barn, adventure playground villages, jumping pillows, tunnels and swings. For those who like adventure, there’s a high ropes course plus Fern’s Castle with tunnels, towers and slides complete with a dragon at the top! 



The newer sibling attraction <a href="https://surrey.muddystilettos.co.uk/little-black-book/directory/hobbledown-epsom-hounslow/">Hobbledown Heath</a>, opened in Hounslow in summer ‘22 bringing more of the mystical feel to adventures with four themed play villages set in over 100 acres of beautiful woodland and meadows with all the outdoor fun of the Epsom site.

WHAT: A working farm in the beautiful Surrey countryside with plenty of friendly farm animals plus indoor and outdoor play areas. Outside at <a href="https://surrey.muddystilettos.co.uk/little-black-book/directory/bocketts-farm-park-leatherhead/">Bocketts</a> there is an adventure trail plus trampolines, giant slides, a bouncy pillow and all the usual climbing fun. Make sure you watch the pig race, take a pony ride, hop on board the tractor and visit the cute animals to get the most from your ticket.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-6-frimley-lodge-park-camberley">6. Frimley Lodge Park, Camberley</h2>



WHAT: There are two playgrounds at Frimley Lodge Park &#8211; one behind the café (that recently had a £150k makeover), and one next to the miniature railway. Aimed at children up to 14 years, the spruced-up area includes castle and keep-themed towers, racing zipwires and various swings. Inclusive play equipment includes a wheelchair swing, ground level roundabout and trampoline, sensory eco-rain wheel, play panels, tipi carousel, birds nest swing and see-saw.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-7-the-magic-garden-east-molesey">7. The Magic Garden, East Molesey</h2>



WHAT: Come face to face with mysterious mythical beasts, storm the battlements, besiege the towers and explore the secret grotto in this <a href="https://www.hrp.org.uk/hampton-court-palace/whats-on/the-magic-garden/#gs_9ckvrs">magical children&#8217;s playground</a> located in the grounds of Hampton Court Palace. Each area represents myths, legends, stories and even real objects that can be found at the palace. Once you have ticked everything off in the garden, it&#8217;s the perfect opportunity to discover those real objects in and around the palace.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-8-lightwater-country-park-near-bagshot">8. Lightwater Country Park, near Bagshot</h2>



WHAT: After an £80k renovation, this is one of the best adventure playgrounds around, with two multi-play units, a climbing frame, an activity net, lots of fun swings, an agility trail, steel drums for musical children and the “rock ‘n bowl roundabout,&#8221; (which the kids are guaranteed to love since the design was decided after consultations with local children.) You’ll find the playground next to the café, so it’s a great spot to take a break with a coffee.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-9-winkworth-arboretum-godalming">9. Winkworth Arboretum, Godalming</h2>

WHAT: The natural play area nestled amongst birch trees and without a plastic slide in sight at <a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/surrey/winkworth-arboretum">Winkworth</a> stands ready for afternoons of tree-mendous adventure. The play area was designed by a local scout group and is built using sustainable British oak and robinia. The structures follow the organic forms of their materials to create quirky features such as a chunky branch den and a staircase carved into a huge fallen oak trunk. Each feature is linked, combining a natural climbing frame, wobbly bridge, balance beam, rope bridge and more to form a varied and adventurous trail.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-10-discovery-land-at-priory-farm">10. Discovery Land at Priory Farm</h2>



WHAT: Set among 40 acres, the 2024 Muddy Award winner for Best Family Attraction is a fabulous family nature trail. The way-marked walk takes you through ancient woodland, green pastures, meadows and around the lakes, with surprises around every corner including beautifully carved fairy houses, pirate ship, fort and rabbit rest.

HOW MUCH? Peak (school holidays) is £8 per person and off-peak (term time) is £6 per person on the door.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-11-tilgate-park-crawley">11. Tilgate Park, Crawley</h2>



WHAT: Tilgate Park has loads to fill a day with lakes, lawns and gardens and miles of woodland and bridleways for long leisurely walks and a tree trail. The Green Flag award winning park also boasts a Nature Centre and excellent activities and attractions &#8211; within the Walled Garden there is a fun maze with a lookout tower in the centre. The play area has 12 pieces of new equipment, including a new basket swing, a swing seat, see-saw, spinner, springers, a large net twister, multi-play units and a wide range of climbing activities for all ages.
