It was the leaked photos of Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) kissing Aidan (John Corbett) during the filming of And Just Like That in the middle of Manhattan earlier this year that did it. Suddenly we were longing to sip Cosmopolitans on a NYC rooftop, strolling through Central Park and ordering eggs over easy in a neon-lit diner.

It’s an itch that needs to be scratched, but so much has happened in the city that never sleeps since the pandemic, it can be hard to know where to begin when it comes to what to see and do, where to eat and sleep. Thankfully, Muddy has a finger on the pulse, so if you’re heading Stateside here’s a curated guide of everything you need for a fabulous long weekend in one of our favourite cities on earth. If you’ve never been to NYC, it’s a given you’re going to want to stand at the top of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.esbnyc.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Empire State Building</a>, have a walk in Central Park and take in Times Square, but if you’re been there, done that, got the Big Apple T-shirt, here are some in-the-know alternatives.&nbsp;

Muddy’ll be making a beeline for&nbsp;<a href="https://www.metmuseum.org/exhibitions/a-line-of-beauty" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Karl Lagerfeld:&nbsp;A Line of Beauty</a>&nbsp;exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art (5 May – 16 July 23), showing around 150 pieces from the late designer’s collections, from the 50s through to his last in 2019, plus sketches and more (no, not Choupette the cat).



Did you know there are beaches in New York? Well you do now, and this summer sees the opening of Manhattan Beach at the&nbsp;<a href="https://hudsonriverpark.org/locations/gansevoort-peninsula/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Gansevoort Peninsula</a>, four miles of riverside fun between Chelsea and the Meatpacking District, where you can sit at picnic tables, lounge by the river, hire bikes, kayak, play mini golf and even try trapeze.&nbsp;

Go high brow with some&nbsp;<a href="https://publictheater.org/programs/shakespeare-in-the-park/free-shakespeare-in-the-park/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">FREE Shakespeare</a>&nbsp;at the open-air Delacorte Theatre overlooked by the Belvedere Castle in Central Park. Hamlet, directed by Tony Award winner Kenny Leon, kicks off 8 June and runs until 6 August.&nbsp;

Talking of theatre, Broadway hits like&nbsp;The Phantom of the Opera, Cats, Chicago&nbsp;and&nbsp;The Lion King&nbsp;have been running for decades, but there are some new shows you might want to check out this year, including&nbsp;<a href="https://www.lct.org/shows/camelot/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Camelot</a>&nbsp;at the Lincoln Centre’s Vivian Beaumont Theatre (from 13 April),&nbsp;<a href="https://newyorknewyorkbroadway.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York, New York</a>&nbsp;(from 26 April) at the St James Theatre and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.backtothefuturemusical.com/new-york/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Back to the Future the Musical</a>&nbsp;(from 3 August) at the Winter Garden Theatre.&nbsp;

Manhattan’s dining&nbsp; scene is&nbsp;always&nbsp;in flux; when one restaurant shuts, another opens, which means it’s constantly evolving and producing some of the top table experiences in the world.



Love Italian? Try new eatery&nbsp;<a href="https://www.badromannyc.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bad Roman</a>&nbsp;at Columbus Circle which has rave reviews for atmosphere, service and food – think delicious dishes like chicken al limone, spicy crab cannelloni and truffle honey ricotta.&nbsp;



Maine lobster, surf &amp; turf crab cake and grilled guinea hen are some of the mouth-watering choices on the menu at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fiveacresnyc.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Five Acres</a>, a new modern, plant-filled, farm-to-table restaurant open for breakfast, lunch and dinner at The Rockefeller Centre.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.jojiny.com/about/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Jōji’s</a>&nbsp;a bit hush hush. Tucked away in an alcove under Grand Central Terminal, it’s a new 18-seater Omakase restaurant by Michelin-starred chef Daniel Boulud and each course is paired with sake and wine.&nbsp;



It’s all about the Med at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.amalinyc.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Amali</a>, a gorgeous new place in Midtown with white and wood decor and menus spanning brunch, lunch and dinner covering everything from gluten-free and dairy-free to vegetarian and vegan options – hello spiced chickpea burger and marinated kale with cabbage, mint and peanut dressing.&nbsp;

City views with a cocktail is Muddy’s kinda sightseeing. Nowhere does rooftop bars better than the Big Apple and our favourites are the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.thepresslounge.com/photos/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Press Lounge</a>&nbsp;at the top of Ink48 Hotel in Hell’s Kitchen and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.1hotels.com/brooklyn-bridge/taste/harriets-rooftop" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Harriet’s Rooftop Lounge</a>&nbsp;at 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge, right by the famous bridge.

There some new contenders in town though, like&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nubeluzbyjose.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nubulez</a>&nbsp;by Jose Andre, a beautiful bar on the 50th floor of The Ritz-Carlton New York, and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.overstory-nyc.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Overstory</a>, a cocktail joint with a wraparound terrace and&nbsp;360˚&nbsp;views in the Financial District.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hot-hotels">Hot hotels&nbsp;</h2>

The city that never sleeps sure has a lot of hotels. Iconic Midtown places like&nbsp;<a href="https://www.theplazany.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Plaza</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fourseasons.com/newyork/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Four Seasons</a>, or&nbsp;<a href="https://www.themarkhotel.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Mark</a>&nbsp;in the Upper East Side are always a safe (if pricey) bet, but if you’re looking for something exciting and new, we’ve got the lowdown.&nbsp;



Opening this spring,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.thefifthavenuehotel.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Fifth Avenue Hotel</a>&nbsp;in NoMad district looks super elegant – some of the suites have terraces and the low-lit bar looks like a choice spot for late night cocktails.&nbsp;

Also new in NoMad is&nbsp;<a href="https://virginhotels.com/nyc/step-inside/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Virgin Hotels</a>&nbsp;first NYC property, a 39-storey hub with restaurant, fancy gym, outdoor Pool Club with swimming pool and loungers only accessible to guests and Everdene, a massive indoor/outdoor dining and cocktail hangout. You’ll find Muddy with a Manhattan by the pool. &nbsp;

<a href="https://www.aman.com/hotels/aman-new-york" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Aman New York</a> has been causing a stir both sides of the Atlantic since its opening. Set in the Crown Building, former home of the Museum of Modern Art on the corner of 5th Avenue and Central Park, it’s spicing up Midtown with a three-storey spa including a swimming pool lined with day beds and fire pits. Dining-wise you can tuck into Italian at Arva or try Japanese washoku at Nama then descend to the basement club for late-night Jazz.

<a href="https://hotelchelsea.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hotel Chelsea</a>, NYC’s most Rock ’n’ Roll hotel, is back! Shuttered in 2011, it’s been brought back to life with a refurb so you can follow in the footsteps of past guests like Mark Twain, Patti Smith, Madonna (it’s where she shot her photography book Sex) and, err, Sid Vicious (he allegedly stabbed his girlfriend Nancy there, but let’s not dwell on that). Lots of the cool original features have been left, like the central wrought-iron staircase, stained-glass windows and its famous neon sign, but there’s lots of new stuff to love, from a grand piano in the Lobby Bar to the tiger-print chairs.
