It turns out pancakes aren’t one-size-fits-all in Surrey. In every town, they have their own style, personality, and unapologetic approach to toppings – much like the locals. And, yes, some of them are worth travelling for.

Guildford

Here, pancakes come with flair. Think berries galore, lemon balm and berry compote, plus a side of artisan coffee. Head to The Ivy Castle View, Frésco Delikafessen or The Boathouse Café where they’re beautiful enough to Instagram but generous enough to fuel a shopping spree. Portion sizes are ambitious because nothing says “weekend done right” like pancakes stacked higher than your heels.

Farnham

Farnham keeps it sophisticated but grounded, with brunch spots that balance indulgence and charm. Expect classic pancake stacks and incredible sweet and savoury crêpes at B’elicious Crêpes, where the portions are generous, the coffee is excellent, and the vibe is effortlessly relaxed. At Megan’s, the focus is practically healthy – think chia, blueberries, banana, and pistachio pancakes – though we won’t judge the generous drizzle of maple syrup that inevitably makes an appearance.

Dorking

Dorking keeps things calm and classic. Fluffy pancakes that remind you of childhood breakfasts, with a grown-up twist: a drizzle of pure maple syrup and fresh berries at the Red Moon Café & Bistro. Or at Arto, fluffy pancakes with ether fresh blueberries and berry compote or crispy bacon, banana and maple syrup. Comfort food done right, with a side of serene Surrey charm – and perfect after a romp in the Surrey Hills.

In Godalming, pancakes are practical, rustic, and slightly wild. Think crêpes with mushroom and cheese, or lemon, sugar, ice cream and whipped cream (totally wild!) at Huskins. And if that’s not your vibe, the stack of five pancakes at Esquires might float your boat. Choose from maple bacon pancakes or very berry with vegan whipped cream. You might eat them after a walk on the hills, hands sticky, cheeks rosy, perhaps popping into for a second coffee while you’re at it.

Reigate

Reigate pancakes are trendy, unapologetic, and Instagram-ready. Nutella and crushed pistachio, classic biscoff, apples and cinnamon, grilled lounza (smoked pork loin to you and me) and fried eggs with butter – there’s a stack for every diet and every aesthetic at Cypriot restaurant, Nisou. You’ll leave feeling full, slightly smug, and very grateful you brought your camera. And from 16-21 Feb, it’s Pancake Week at Nisou – with even more Insta-ready toppings on the menu (hello Oreo and white chocolate sauce!).

Weybridge

Weybridge goes big on indulgence. Think chocolate buttermilk pancakes topped with chocolate chips, chocolate sauce and whipped cream at the Bla Bla Café – pancakes here are a celebration, not a meal. At the Cornelian, the pancakes are on a similar level of decadence. Think fluffy American pancakes with chocolate sauce, banana and candied nuts (they also do a mixed berry compote with marscapone creme and maple syrup). Elegant enough for a Sunday brunch with friends, casual enough to wipe your sticky fingers on a designer napkin.

Woking

In Woking, pancakes are fun and versatile – the kind that turn an ordinary Tuesday into something worth lingering over. At Marciano Lounge, expect blueberry-topped stacks with maple mascarpone and berry compote, while Mokka Bistro keeps things classic – mixed berries and maple syrup for the traditionalists, or layered with streaky bacon and fried eggs for those taking Shrove Tuesday seriously. Haslemere

Haslemere does Shrove Tuesday with countryside charm and a generous side of comfort. At The Georgian Coppa Club, expect beautifully plated stacks in stylish surroundings – we’re eyeing up the kefir pancakes with berry compôte, whipped mascarpone, pistachios and honey. That said, the bacon-draped version with maple syrup and a melting knob of butter is calling our name too.

Prefer something a little heartier? Harper’s Steakhouse brings a more rustic, relaxed feel, serving up indulgent waffles piled high with the likes of BBQ pulled pork or fried chicken and bacon. In Haslemere, it’s all about cosy corners, good company and turning that midweek flip into a proper occasion.

Camberley

Camberley pancakes are bold and slightly over-the-top. At Café Bistro they come in all sorts of ways: slathered with Nutella with sliced banana and a dollop of ice cream, blueberries and ice cream or streaky bacon and fried eggs. At Mullans, they’re a bit more traditional – but no less joyful and nostalgic – with leanings towards berries or bacon. Your choice!

Cobham

Cobham does Pancake Day the polished way – think brunch with a side of people-watching. At The Ivy Cobham Garden, expect picture-perfect stacks of topped with strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, Greek yoghurt, lemon balm and warm red berry sauce. It’s enough to feel indulgent without losing your composure. Prefer something a little cosier? Fego is your go-to for fluffy buttermilk numbers and strong coffee.

Epsom & Ewell

Epsom and Ewell keeps it classic with a modern twist. Lemon and sugar? Yes. But also sugar, cinnamon and ice cream or banana with caramel sauce at Mandalina Patisserie in Ewell Village. At the Zig Zag Café in Epsom, they come sweet and savoury – think strawberries and chocolate sauce, or loaded with cheese and spinnach. Elegant, balanced, and leaving you ready for a stroll around town afterwards.

Staines-upon-Thames

Staines pancakes are playful and practical – and made for those with an appetite. Cafés like Eggham on Toast have a vast menu with everything from strawberry, banana and Nutella pancakes to buttermilk fried chicken with streaky bacon and maple syrup. While at Nostrano it’s smoked streaky bacon and maple syrup on buttermilk pancakes. Perfect for a quick brunch or lingering with a coffee.
