Pubs with great gardens

Go alfresco! Is there anything more British than a pub garden? We've scoured Surrey for the best in show

A pick of the best Surrey pubs with groovy gardens and other cool outside spaces. Any to add to the list?  Let me know in the comments box below. Tally ho!

The Anchor, Pyrford Lock, Wisley

Plonked right on the banks of the River Wey, not far from the gorgeous RHS Wisley gardens, The Anchor and its garden are nothing short of delightful. You’ll need to be swift though – or lucky – to get a table outside on a sunny day, as you can’t book in advance. It’s a great place to park the car, take a wander along the river to work up an appetite, then kick back with your Pimms and watch the narrowboats go past.

The Onslow Arms, West Clandon

The garden at The Onslow Arms in West Clandon is gorgeous, and a beautiful place to while away a few hours. It’s a large courtyard with some shelter and heating for those less summery, summer’s days. And there’s the most gorgeous collection of potted plants I’ve seen outside the RHS gardens at Wisley. This is certainly no container garden that’s been shoved into terracotta pots and left to it’s own devices. Someone (one of the owners, I’m told) spends time here tending these plants, and it shows. As a bonus, you can count on fabulous food here as well. Last year’s Muddy Awards winner, and finalist this year. Says it all really.

The Victoria, Oxshott

A pretty garden and fabulous French-inspired food. What more could you ask for? A bit of celeb-spotting perhaps? Okay, you may even get that here too as the pub is a regular haunt for some of the Chelsea footballers.

Stag on the River, Eashing, nr Godalming

This is a gorgeous 18th-century pub right on the river Wey with a patio and garden – and a very relaxing way to while away a lazy afternoon listening to the sounds of rushing waters. It’s just a five minute drive from the A3, in the village of Eashing, and well worth seeking out. Food is fresh and locally sourced where possible. There are also seven stylish rooms if you want to make a weekend out of it.

The Station Pub, Nutfield

Family-friend pub in Nutfield, with a big garden and children’s play area. During the summer, there’s also a bouncy castle. We love the outdoor pizza barn with woodfired pizza oven, serving homemade pizzas. It’s open from Thurs-Sat from 5pm, and on Sundays from 3pm.

The Fox Revived, Norwood

A proper country pub that’s recently undergone major renovations after a two-year closure. And it’s looking mighty lovely. When I reviewed it in March, the garden was still coming together. But it’s big and family friendly. The menu is extensive and varied, offering more restauranty fare as well as pub classics.

The Weyside Inn, Guildford

Not a garden, exactly, but a gloriously gorgeous outside terrace sitting right on the banks of the River Wey. There terrace is large and the seating is comfy, so you can sit back and take in the narrow boats and kayaks as they glide past, while you enjoy a pint from the outdoor bar and a burger from the newly opened Burger Shack. You can’t reserve tables on the terrace, and when the sun is shining it fills up quick – so get there early to grab the best spot.

The Abinger Hatch, Abinger Common

One of the Muddy Awards finalists, and a worthy one at that. The Abinger Hatch, at Abinger Common near Dorking, is tucked neatly down some of the prettiest country lanes you will find anywhere. There’s a large garden with picnic-sets and boules, and barbecues in the summer. There’s a pretty church across the road, and lovely walks nearby. What’s not to like?

The Red Barn, Blindley Heath

A stunning 300 year old converted barn with a large garden in Blindley Heath. It’s been a while since I visited, but it’s family friendly and the food has always been reliably good. There’s also plenty of car parking.

The Bletchingley Arms, Bletchingley

There’s a large patio and garden with a kids’ play area and an outside bar, plus these funky dining huts with heaters for when the weather takes a dive. Inside, the pub is stylish and contemporary. Food-wise you’ll find an extensive menu of standard pub fare at good prices.
