The award-winning gastropub in Chobham formerly known as The Red Lion has had a spritz and spruce-up and emerged as <a href="https://no15chobham.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">No15 Restaurant and Bar</a>. It&#8217;s in the lovely village of Chobham, at the northern end along a country lane on the edge of Chobham Common. 



Locals have long been in the know about the foodie credentials of this family-run eatery, but it&#8217;s time to shout it from the rooftops. This is a restaurant worth going out of your way for. 



It&#8217;s fabulously located &#8211; just a short way off the M3 and the M25. Woking is little more than 10 minutes away in the car, Camberley and Egham are both 20 minutes away, and Weybridge is less than 30.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-vibe">THE VIBE</h2>

It&#8217;s long been more in the realm of fine dining restaurant than village boozer. But there&#8217;s a friendly, casual vibe going on here. It&#8217;s what you might call affordable and relaxed fine dining. 



If you&#8217;re driving, you&#8217;ll probably park in the one-site car park and this means you&#8217;ll enter the restaurant via the garden. It&#8217;s beautiful &#8211; a perfect and peaceful oasis of flowers and shrubs with a kitchen garden and a fabulous pond. I dined on a cool autumn evening, and it was so magically lit up that I was tempted to sit outside despite the weather. On a sunny day, it would be the perfect spot for alfresco lunch, dinner or social sips. 



Inside though, you&#8217;ve got the best of both worlds. The older part of the restaurant is where you&#8217;ll find the bar. It&#8217;s a cosy space with exposed brick walls, open fireplaces and comfy sofas and chairs. 



Overlooking the sparkling fairy-lit garden, there&#8217;s a conservatory dining room with floor-to-ceiling glass doors that open on warm days. Interiors are stylish and smart, but understated. It&#8217;s all about the view of that fabulous garden. And from where I was sitting &#8211; on a luxe velvet armchair &#8211; it was rather special.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scoff-amp-quaff">SCOFF &amp; QUAFF</h2>

There&#8217;s a firm focus on local produce &#8211; and spectacular food. It&#8217;s at the fine-dining end of the spectrum, but with sensible portion sizes. 



Menus change regularly, and produce comes from their own garden or top-quality local suppliers. There’s a stong emphasis on sustainable fish and seafood plus local game when it’s in season.&nbsp;Meats are aged, cured and smoked in their own butchery.



Menus are priced by two- or three-courses, and there are also sharing platters for two (seafood, chateaubriand). This is fine dining at its most affordable best. It&#8217;s on par with London restaurants (without the schlep), and the menus offer a delightful alternative to the typical fare you often find in Surrey.



It&#8217;s right up my street &#8211; as a fan of seafood, there&#8217;s a lot to tempt (oysters, lobster, scallops, salmon and more). But carnivores won&#8217;t be disappointed either, with lamb, venison, duck and wood pigeon all featuring. There are also veggie choices.

I dined with my foodie son who, like me, loves seafood and trying dishes we wouldn&#8217;t regularly eat. While we looked at the menu a selection of canapés arrived: guinea fowl terrine wrapped in Serrano ham, Thai cod fish cake with herb mayonnaise; and deep fried Shepherd’s Purse Cheese with pineapple chutney. Then came the homemade breads &#8211; sundried tomato and balsamic onion breads with whipped salted and chimichurri butters. Gorgeous!



We started by sharing fresh oysters and the venison tartare with walnut ketchup, pine oil and mushrooms. What can I say? The oysters &#8211; fresh from Maldon in Essex &#8211; were superb. Big, juicy, perfect. The venison was lovely too &#8211; as a game meat, I&#8217;d expected it to be rich. But it was much more delicate, and dressed with a simple egg yolk, a good choice.

For mains we shared again: plaice Viennoise with herb creamed potato, tenderstem broccoli and white wine cream, and sea bass with shallot, bacon, chicory, celeriac, green beans and a red wine sauce. Both were perfection on a plate. Who knew a red wine sauce would pair so nicely with fish?!



Pudding was another sharing affair. A cheeseboard, and the caramelised pear with gorgonzola ice cream. We chose the pear mainly because of the ice cream (utterly delish, BTW). The cheeseboard is on another level &#8211; with a cheese menu from which you choose your own fromage.

And after all that, a plate of dainty petit fours arrived: rhubarb cheesecake, raspberry chocolates and almond and lemon cake. It&#8217;s funny how you can always find room for more.



The drinks list is worth a mention at this point. There&#8217;s a good choice of wines, both local and from around the world, as well as &#8211; I went for a classic Sauv Blanc which went down very well indeed.

No15 Restaurant and Bar is a restaurant for grown-ups &#8211; but children from 12 up are welcome for dining.

Yes, four-legged furries are very welcome in the bar and garden.

No15 Restaurant and Bar is right next to <a href="https://www.surreywildlifetrust.org/nature-reserves/chobham-common" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chobham Common</a>. At 1,400-acres, it&#8217;s the largest National Nature Reserve in the south-east of England and a wonderful example of lowland heath. It&#8217;s a lovely spot to work up an appetite for lunch, with lots to see all year round &#8211; from seasonal colour to the abundance of wildlife. If you visit for lunch, Chobham a charming village with some lovely independent shops. The pretty Church of St Lawrence sits proudly in the middle of the village – a bit of a relic, it&nbsp;dates back to 1090.

Good for: Foooodies! This is an excellent destination restaurant that’s well worth travelling for.&nbsp;If you love seafood, you&#8217;ll be in heaven.



Not for: If you’re a fussy eater or ‘like what you like’ and rarely deviate from the script, you may struggle with the unapologetically chefy menu. 



The damage: Worth. Every. Penny. Two courses at dinner is £37 and three courses is £47. Two courses at lunch is £33, and three courses is £43. The sharing seafood platters are £120 for two people and the 21oz Chateaubriand for two is £70.
