These beautiful 18th-century landscaped gardens feel special without being showy &#8211; winding paths, bridges, lakes and plenty of moments to pause and chat. Afterwards, head to <a href="https://www.theploughinncobham.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Plough Inn</a>, just a short drive away, for a relaxed lunch or early supper. Expect cosy pub vibes, excellent steaks and well-made cocktails.



Another winning combination is <a href="https://thesculpturepark.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Sculpture Park</a> in Churt, where the setting does much of the work for you. Wandering among contemporary sculptures gives you instant conversation starters (have you seen the horseshoe dragon?). Speaking of dragons&#8230; when you’re ready for a drink, <a href="https://www.belandthedragon.co.uk/churt" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bel and The Dragon</a> is just across the road. It&#8217;s ideal for a glass of something nice (pink and fizzy, if you must).



And if things take a spicy turn? This boutique pub also has rooms, making it one of those rare first-date options that can very easily turn into more. Their Valentine’s Retreat is a neat add-on: Champagne on arrival, a £45 per person dinner allowance, breakfast the next morning and a late check-out. Romantic, but still cool and casual.

Start with cocktails in the Bar 36 at <a href="https://www.mandolay.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Mandolay</a>. It’s a polished but relaxed space that’s ideal for easing into the evening. From there, move through to the <a href="https://www.mandolay.com/the-grill-and-bar-36/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Grill Restaurant</a> for an early bite. The menu leans into elevated classics &#8211; think pancetta and pea arancini, tempura-battered cod, or the much-loved Mandolay Theatre burger. Two courses are £20, three are £25.



Then, simply cross the road to <a href="https://trafalgartickets.com/g-live-guildford/en-GB/event/comedy/clinton-baptiste-spectral-intercourse-14-feb-tickets" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">G Live</a> for the main event. Clinton Baptiste is back with his new live show Spectral Intercourse. Yes, it’s an eyebrow-raising title &#8211; and no, it’s not what it seems. The nation’s favourite clairvoyant medium takes audience questions and very real, earthbound dilemmas, before reaching out to the spirit world for answers. He promises to probe sensitively.



If you’re after something with more chemistry, head to <a href="https://silentpooldistillers.com/products/silent-pool-gin-distillery-tour" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Silent Pool Distillery</a> outside Guildford. Their distillery tour and tasting (£25pp) is relaxed enough to feel fun rather than formal. The 90-minute tour gives you a behind-the-scenes look at the distilling process, with plenty of opportunities to sample Silent Pool’s signature gins along the way. Fun and educational, yes – but also quietly flirtatious after the second tasting.



Once you’ve finished at the distillery, follow it up with a bite to eat down the road at <a href="https://gomshallmill.co.uk/events/valentines-day/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Gomshall Mill</a>. This cosy, characterful pub is a former water-driven corn mill dating back to the 17th century – all wonky charm and riverside appeal. Food is solid gastropub standard, and for Valentine’s they’re leaning into the romance with a menu of specials, including a lavish côte de boeuf to share and a trio of desserts.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stay-the-night">Stay the night</h2>



When dinner turns into drinks – and drinks turn into “shall we just stay?” – it’s worth knowing where to book. Surrey does romantic stays very well, whether you’re after boutique polish or the understated charm of a pub with rooms. Expect good food, great beds and just enough indulgence to make it feel like a treat.
