<p>Wander cobbled streets, admire timber-framed cottages, and stop for a pint in a historic pub &#8211; these Surrey villages are full of charm, history, and picture-perfect corners.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shere">Shere </h2>

<p>Nestled in the Surrey Hills, it’s easy to see why this medieval village is a firm favourite with film directors. With its timber-framed cottages, babbling stream and historic pubs, chances are you’ve already spotted Shere on screen. Tucked between Guildford and Dorking, Shere is home to St James’ Church &#8211; arguably one of the most photogenic in England.</p>



<p>Hollywood love Shere too! Fans of <em>The Holiday</em> will recognise several village shops and the 15th-century White Horse pub. And <em>Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason</em> also filmed here, using Shere as the setting for Bridget’s mum’s vow renewal. What really makes a wander around Shere special, though, is its collection of independent gems &#8211; from Split Figs to Hilly&#8217;s Tea Shop. And of course, the Silent Pool Distillery is just two minutes down the road.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-limpsfield">Limpsfield</h2>

<p>A smaller contender is the lovely village of Limpsfield on the Kent/Surrey border, close to Oxted, which dates back to Saxon times and appears in the Domesday Book. Limpsfield’s teeny high street boasts several Muddy Award finalists and is home to the cracking pub, The Bull.</p>



<p>Surrounded by Green Belt countryside, this incredibly pretty and partly medieval village is noted for its rich mix of architecture. There&#8217;s everything from lovingly restored post-and-beam, timber-framed cottages dating back to Norman times, to classic Georgian houses and Arts and Crafts homes. It all adds up to a whopping 89 listed buildings of historical interest. With beautiful countryside walks, a cricket and tennis club, and a charming church, it’s no wonder Limpsfield has scooped the RHS Village in Bloom award several years running (and it’s also home to <em>Strictly&#8217;s</em> rugby star Chris Robshaw).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ripley">Ripley</h2>

<p>Ripley is a tranquil escape yet brilliantly located &#8211; close to Guildford but a world away from the bustle. Its high street is lined with historic buildings and coaching inns dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries, including the picturesque Talbot Inn.</p>



<p>It’s famous for its village green (one of the largest and oldest in England, no less), which hosts the obligatory summer cricket matches, a popular monthly farmers’ market, and a large bonfire event each autumn. There’s also a wonderfully peaceful riverside walk along the River Wey, with the photogenic ruins of Newark Priory in sight.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-chiddingfold">Chiddingfold</h2>

<p>This historic village is another known for its charming green, pond and traditional pubs like The Crown Inn and The Swan Inn &#8211; ticking all the chocolate-box village boxes. Look out for St Mary’s Church (13th century) and the working blacksmith’s forge (19th century) on the green, along with many timber-framed Wealden houses.</p>



<p>Famous for its glassworks during the Elizabethan era, you can still spot beautiful stained glass in the church today. Nestled in the Surrey Hills AONB near the West Sussex border, it offers idyllic countryside walk. And just outside the village you’ll find Ramster Hall, a private country house and wedding venue where the Hollywood period drama <em>Emma</em> was filmed in its picture-perfect Long Hall.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-godstone">Godstone</h2>

<p>Not far from Reigate and Oxted is the charming village of Godstone, blending countryside appeal with green spaces and historic architecture. With both the Greensand Way and the North Downs Way passing through, it can feel wonderfully rural despite its proximity to the M25 (just don’t mention the sinkhole!).</p>



<p>It even has its own vineyard, beautiful open-water swimming at Diver’s Cove, and a central duck pond surrounded by historic pubs &#8211; plus an artisan bakery tucked inside an old butcher’s shop. Oh and you&#8217;ll also Godstone Farm here &#8211; with Surrey&#8217;s biggest indoor play barn. What more could you want?</p>
