Big screen dreams! 6 new movies hitting cinemas in July
Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum are moonstruck, Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones get caught in a spin while Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman save the world one joke at a time. Let’s hear it for the films hitting cinemas this month.
PICK OF THE MONTH
Deadpool & Wolverine, Thu 25 Jul
They have been seen filming all over the Muddy counties, teasing us with quippy snippets, but finally we get to see Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman aka Deadpool and Wolverine in action this month. The comic book superheroes are thrust together to put a stop to supervillain Cassandra Nova, (Emma Corrin as you’ve never seen her before). There’s time travelling, telekinesis, plenty of epic fight scenes, special effects, quick jokes and Matthew Macfadyen – sounds like some pretty sweet cinema to us.
MaXXXine, Fri 5 Jul
Mia Goth, Elizabeth Debicki, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Halsey, Lily Collins and Kevin Bacon – we’re not normally one for slasher movies but when the cast is this good, we will suffer through some blood splatter! Ti West’s sequel to his Texas Chainsaw Massacre-esque, X, sees Goth’s Maxine Minx trying to make it as a film star, but a murderous madman stalking Hollywood starlets threatens to kill her big break. Set in the Eighties, watch for the cast, fab fashion and cracking soundtrack.
Despicable Me 4, Fri 12 Jul
At last, a kids movie we’d happily skip to the cinema to see. Hurrah! Steve Carell’s anti-villain Gru and loveable Minions are back after a seven-year hiatus, bringing us a new nemesis – Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrell) and his femme fatale girlfriend Valentina (Sofia Vergara) – and plenty of Minions mayhem. Always a riot, we just cannot believe we are up to a fourth Despicable Me movie.
Fly Me to the Moon, Fri 12 Jul
There are sooo many conspiracies about whether or not the first moon landing was real, and this sharp, stylish, and star-studded comedy drama exploits all of them! With the race hotting up between America and the Soviet Union to put a man on the moon, marketing maven Kelly Jones (Scarlett Johansson) is drafted to fix NASA’s image problem. A hefty task involving actors, clever advertising, oh, and a fake moon landing video. Channing Tatum (swoon) Woody Harrelson, Ray Romano, Bill Barretta and Jim Rash join Johansson in the brilliant Fly Me To The Moon.
Twisters, Wed 17 Jul
If you thought one storm chasing disaster movie was more than enough, you’d be wrong. Batten down the hatches for Twisters, a modern-day chapter of the 1996 blockbuster Twister, which sees Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones tracking and taming tornados just like Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton did before them. Yep sounds crazy (and unnecessary) but, with those two taking the lead, Lee Isaac Chung directing and the producers of the Jurassic Park, Bourne Identity and Indiana Jones series at the helm, we’re in safe cinematic hands.
Thelma, Fri 19 Jul
Veteran Oscar nominee and all round grandma goals, June Squibb, takes on her first leading role in this action-packed comedy. She plays the eponymous Thelma, a sassy 93-year old granny, who embarks on a dangerous mission to find the conman who duped her for $10k by pretending to be her grandson over the phone. Joining her on this pensioners pursuit for justice is Parker Posey, Clark Gregg, Nicole Byer, Malcolm McDowell and Richard Roundtree in what would be his final performance. Funny, exciting and utterly delightful.
