<p>Foxhills is a country club and resort set on 400 acres of beautiful Surrey countryside just outside the village of Ottershaw, near Chertsey. You could easily spend a week here and still be left wanting more. As well as a spa and wellness centre, there are three golf courses, 11 tennis courts, five pools, woodland walks and more than 200 weekly activities for adults and children. But you don&#8217;t have to stay here to enjoy these fabulous facilities &#8211; there are bespoke memberships available, tailored to your interests, which range from full membership giving access to all facilities, to golf or HealthSpa memberships.</p>



<p>It&#8217;s in a handy location, near to Guildford and Woking, about an hour from central London and only 20 minutes from Heathrow Airport. The M25 and M3 are both just 10 minutes away and easily accessible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>THE VIBE</strong></h2>

<p>There&#8217;s a definite &#8216;swanky members&#8217; club vibe&#8217; going on and yet despite the luxe styling it doesn&#8217;t feel pompous or elitist. Foxhills is accessible and friendly &#8211;  there&#8217;s a real focus on families who are made to feel super welcome.</p>



<p>The entrance is impressive &#8211; a long curved driveway flanked by manicured lawns and gardens which leads to the elegant 19th-century manor house, the former home of the naughty 18th century politician Sir Charles James Fox.</p>



<p>Sir Charles has a penchant for the high life &#8211; booze, gambling, women &#8211; and when ill health and gambling debts forced him out of London he did what we&#8217;d all do given the chance and moved to the home counties&nbsp;with his mistress to clean up his act.</p>



<p>Inside, this Gothic Revival manor house exudes elegance and sophistication with cool contemporary twists. The flagship restaurant The Fox is here along with a bar, plus more casual lounges and terraces. Upstairs, there are several elegant private function rooms.</p>



<p>The HealthSpa and gym is in a separate building with its own garden. And it&#8217;s here that Nineteen, another of the three restaurants is also located.</p>



<p>The recently opened The Pavilion – a £7m development which opened in 2021 devoted to families – includes indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a soft play space, games room, crèche and art studio, plus the family restaurant, Flo’s.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>THE SPA</strong></h2>

<p>Housed in its own building just a short walk from the Manor House, the HealthSpa has superb facilities including an indoor swimming pool, hydro pool with massage jets, a steam room, relaxation room and two Finnish saunas. </p>



<p>There’s also an outdoor hot tub and spa garden, which features a chemical-free natural swimming pool purified by plants and minerals, and a yoga cabin.</p>



<p>If you&#8217;re looking for a spa break, Foxhills would certainly fit the bill &#8211; there are several day spa and overnight packages and a tempting menu of luxury spa treatments ranging from facials and massage to body scrubs, manicures and pedicures. There are also holistic and wellness treatments like acupuncture, reflexology, reiki and sports therapy and massage. </p>



<p>All facilities and classes are free for guests, except the 18-hole golf courses and spa treatments. I recommend the outdoor hot tub followed by a dip in the natural plunge pool: it&#8217;s chilly but you&#8217;ll feel fabulous afterwards.</p>



<p>During my visit, I enjoyed the Foxhills Spa Ritual, an 80-minute treatment that combines a relaxing full-body massage with an Elemis facial. Need I say it was absolute bliss &#8211; my therapist Tamara deftly kneading out the knots in my shoulders and back while I hovered in that glorious state of no-quite-asleep  not-quite-awake. The lovely thing about the Spa Ritual is that it moves seamlessly from massage to facial leaving my skin feeling buffed, polished and renewed. </p>



<p>The spa is open to those aged 16 years and above, but under 18’s must be<br>accompanied by an adult whilst having a treatment.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>SCOFF &amp; QUAFF</strong></h2>

<p>There are three restaurants – The Fox Dining rooms (AA Rosette cuisine), Nineteen brasserie and Flo’s (especially for families) – offering everything from dinner, private dining, light lunches and afternoon tea. There&#8217;s also a separate bar, The Manor Lounge. </p>



<p>We dined in The Fox, which is spread across three sumptuously designed inter-connected dining spaces. The menus are based around fresh, locally-sourced and seasonal ingredients with dishes like smoked pigeon breast, cured mackerel and stout glazed king oyster mushroom on the starters list, and confit pork belly, truffle gnocchi, stone bass and salt baked celeriac on the mains menu.</p>



<p>On my visit, I started the tempura cod cheeks with charred gem, yuzu and squid  in mayonnaise and Mr M chose the cured mackerel with buttermilk, cucumber and fresh citrus. Both were stunning, and a wonderful indicator for what was to follow. I moved on to the stone bass with saffron potato, roasted cauliflower and mussel and prawn bisque. Mr M chose the confit pork belly with crispy cheek, crushed swede and apple caramel &#8211; three days later and he&#8217;s still talking about how good it was. The stone bass, too, was excellent.</p>

<p>For pudding we shared a mango cheese cake and the chocolate and raspberry dome, which were both lovely.</p>



<p>For breakfast there&#8217;s a buffet of cereals, compote, yoghurt and pastries alongside a good selection of hot goodies including bacon, sausages, mushrooms, tomatoes, baked beans, scrambled egg and hash browns. You can also order from a breakfast menu.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>STAY</strong></h2>

<p>There are 66 bedrooms dotted around the estate including a cobbled courtyard with swimming pool and woodland areas. The bedrooms are elegant and stylish, decorated in calming neutrals with luxe gold and silver accessories. Most rooms have a bath and walk-in shower and all have bathrobes and slippers.</p>



<p>Our suite was extravagantly appointed with luxe velvet sofas, stylish lamps, gilt mirrors and a superking bed. French doors led to a small patio with bistro table and chairs looking out over the central courtyard. </p>

<p>Foxhills was named ‘Best for Families&#8217; at the 2023 Condé Nast Johansens Awards for Excellence &#8211; which says it all really. As well as the huge array of activities for children, and the amenities and family restaurant in The Pavilion, there are family suites with interconnecting rooms.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>AND DOGS, TOO?</strong></h2>



<p>Aside from guide dogs, four-legged furries are not permitted at Foxhills.</p>

<p>With the leisure facilities on offer at Foxhills &#8211; including the two championship golf courses, Bernard Hunt and Longcross &#8211; there&#8217;s plenty here to keep you busy. But if you do fancy venturing further afield Thorpe Park is less than 10 minutes by car and Legoland Windsor is about 20 minutes away. Brooklands Museum and Mercedes Benz World are 14 minutes away.</p>

<p><strong>Good for:</strong> &nbsp;Families seeking an action-packed break the opportunity to indulge and relax, girly spa breaks, golfing or tennis trips. </p>



<p><strong>Not for:</strong> You&#8217;re in the countryside, so if it&#8217;s a city break you&#8217;re after this isn&#8217;t it.</p>



<p><strong>The damage:</strong> Day spa packages start at £130 per person, Spa breaks start at £422 per room per night. Dinner in The Fox dining room is around £40 per person without wine. </p>
