Off the beaten track and with beautiful views over the Surrey Hills and acres of gorgeous gardens, Hartsfield Manor is a fabulous find. Muddy checks in to check it out.

THE LOWDOWN

Tucked away in the chocolate box village of Betchworth you’ll find this gorgeous Victorian manor house, set among 15 acres of peaceful gardens and with views out over the Surrey Hills.

If peace, tranquility and timeless English countryside are what you seek, this is most certainly where you’ll find it.

You’ll journey down quaint country lanes to find the hotel which gives a real sense that you’re miles from anywhere. And yet it’s handily located just a few miles from the M25 motorway and is a 10-minute drive from both market towns of Dorking and Reigate. Best of both worlds.

The house was built in the late 1860s and was privately owned until the Second World War when it was taken over by the Canadian Army to be used as a hospital. Post war it was used as a training college before becoming a hotel.

THE VIBE

There’s no denying the wow-factor of this beautiful manor house when comes into view at the end of the long, sweeping driveway. The main entry is through a large arched doorway, framed in stone, and here a grand oak staircase bends its way up to the first floor.

The history and charm of this historic building is all here – from the beautiful stain-glass window on the first staircase landing to oak-panelled walls and chandelier lighting – but it blends nicely with more contemporary touches. Think electric blue velvet furnishings and funky light-fittings. It’s elegant but also fun.

The hotel is a popular wedding and conference venue, as well as welcoming both overnight and restaurant guests. On the Saturday night I stayed, there was a small wedding as well as other guests – so the hotel had a buzzing vibe.

SCOFF & QUAFF

The main restaurant at Hartsfield Manor is The Terrace restaurant, a lovely space that opens onto a terraced garden. There’s a separate bar, and a Lounge where afternoon tea and drinks can also be had. Outside, a wide terrace runs along the back of the manor house – and with gorgeous views out over the surrounding countryside, it’s the perfect spot for an aperitif on a sunny Saturday evening, the setting sun casting a pretty glow over the whole setting.

The menu is really well pitched, with a neatly curated range of fabulous sounding dishes offering something to suit most tastes including steaks, burgers, fish and vegetarian options. I started with the roasted butternut and goat’s cheese salad which was delicious, while Mr M chose the smoked peppered mackerel salad, which he was also very happy with.

For mains, I chose the grilled fillet of seabass with sautéed greens, parmentier potatoes and rocket pesto. The Mister chose the pan fried breast of chicken with butter bean purée sprouting broccoli and chorizo dressing – both simple dishes and very well done.

Moving on the puds, I went for the passion fruit and mango pannacotta – a lovely light summery way to end the meal, and Mr M chose the dark chocolate and Malibu mousse which he also enjoyed.

It’s worth letting you know that you don’t have to be a hotel guest to book the restaurant, and on the night we visited there was a large multi-generational family group, and several couples.

PILLOW TALK

There are 50 bedrooms at Hartsfield – ranging from the compact cosy double to the spacious Hartsfield suite – and they’re spread across the main manor house, the lodge and annex buildings. I stayed in the manor house double, on the second floor, which meant I had amazing views.

The rooms are bright, light, and stylishly decorated in a muted palate of light greys, duck egg blues and subtle mauves with deep jewel-coloured highlights. The bed was huge, and the most comfortable hotel room bed I’ve ever slept in, and the bathroom is well kitted out with lovely luxe touches like fluffy bathrooms, huge thick bath sheets and Molten Brown toiletries.

OUT & ABOUT

The lovely market towns of Dorking and Reigate are each only about 10 minutes drive from Hartsfield Manon and worth a mooch the lovely independent boutiques and stores. If you fancy a countryside walk, you’re spoilt for choice here – with Reigate Hill, Box Hill and Headley Heath all within a short drive. If you’re a wine lover – or even just a lush like me – Denbies Wine Estate is worth a visit where they offer wine tastings and tours.

THE MUDDY VERDICT

Good for: This is a lovely spot to come if you want a spot that’s off the beaten track. The warm welcome and intimate vibe will make you feel right at home. Also great for families thanks to the huge garden; and anyone looking for the ideal base to explore the area.

Not for: It’s quiet and relaxed, so if you’re after something with a bit more action, this probably isn’t the place for you.

The damage: Prices vary depending on when you stay and which room you’re in – but range from £71 to £253 a night. A one-night stay in the manor house double is around £196 for one night including breakfast. A package that includes three-course dinner is an additional £30 per person. Alternatively, starters are priced between £7-£9; mains are from £14-£15 and desserts are around £8.
