<p>As quintessentially English as croquet on the lawn and afternoon tea, Langshott Manor is a 16th-century Elizabethan manor house with charm and character by the bucketload. Part of the Alexander Hotels Collection, it&#8217;s been beautifully restored and retains many of its original features from the low timber beams and chunky oak doors to beautiful fireplaces and leaded windows. </p>



<p>Tucked away down a quiet country lane just outside Horley, Langshott sits in three acres of beautifully manicured gardens with exquisitely sculptured hedges, stone ornamental features and the original moat-cum-duck pond. Gatwick Airport is a mere 10-minute drive, but Langshott feels like it&#8217;s worlds away. It&#8217;s interesting given there&#8217;s also a housing estate at the other end of the lane. This slice of old England offers a glorious oasis of calm and tranquility.</p>



<p>There are 22 individually-styled bedrooms at Langshott, plus an award-winning restaurant, several cosy lounges and four private-hire spaces. It&#8217;s a gorgeous spot for a getaway, but Langshott is also a popular venue for exclusive-use weddings, parties and corporate events. It&#8217;s proximity to Gatwick (but happily, not under the flight path) mean&#8217;s it’s also a great place to stay before or after jetting of somewhere.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-vibe"><strong>THE VIBE</strong></h2>

<p>Step through the heavy oak front door and you’ll be transported back in time. There&#8217;s a tonne of history at Langshott Manor, and its apparent every which way you look. Think bold colours, rich furnishings, dark timber panelling and arched doorways. It&#8217;s traditional Tudor opulence at its blest. But it blends well with chic touches like bold wall art and bright pops of colour. For such an elaborate space, the vibe is surprisingly relaxed and comfortable.</p>



<p>Unlike many a rambling historic country hotel, Langshott Manor has more of country house vibe. With just 22 bedrooms and suites, it&#8217;s certainly more boutique than big and there&#8217;s a cosy intimacy that goes with that. </p>



<p>There are three lounges on the ground floor &#8211; each with gorgeous views of the gardens, plush sofas and in the winter months crackling fires. They&#8217;re accurately billed as &#8216;mini hubs of relaxation&#8217;, and are the perfect spot for a pre-or post-dinner drink. </p>



<p>The 2AA Rosette Mulberry Restaurant also makes the most of garden views, and upstairs there’s another lounge, which is available for private hire.</p>



<p>During the summer months there&#8217;s a terrace overlooking the duck pond where afternoon tea is served.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scoff-amp-quaff"><strong>SCOFF &amp; QUAFF</strong></h2>

<p>The award-winning Mulberry Restaurant feels like a five-star affair. It&#8217;s an elegant space with ivory chairs, white table linen and mood lighting. There&#8217;s a grown-up fancy vibe, but it&#8217;s still informal and relaxed. </p>



<p>The menus focus in the finest local produce and are tightly curated with a good choice that includes a fish of the day and butcher&#8217;s choice. My starter of tiger prawns with crab and lime mayonnaise on avocado toast gets thing off to a good start. Light and tangy, and oh-so-pretty on the plate, it was delicious. Across the table, Mr M chose the wild mushroom autumn truffle aranchini. I had a little taste, and it was gorgeous &#8211; rich and full of complementing flavours.</p>



<p>For mains, we both chose the specials. Day boat fish for me &#8211; chalk stream trout on the Thursday we visited &#8211; and the butcher&#8217;s choice of the day for Mr M which was duck. Both were excellent, but the duck, which I think is particularly tricky to get right deserves an extra mention. It was perfectly cooked.</p>

<p>For desert, Mr M chose the Drambuie crème brulée with Yorkshire rhubarb and Scottish oat biscuits which had me feeling a little green eyed across the table. Happily, he&#8217;s good at sharing and I can say it tasted as good as it looked.</p>



<p>I went for the apple crumble tart with cardamom crème anglaise and vanilla ice cream which also went down a treat. </p>



<p>The wine list is impressive but not intimidating. I washed it all down with a delightful New Zealand sauv blanc.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stay"><strong>STAY</strong></h2>

<p>The 22 bedrooms and suites at Langshott Manor come in all shapes and sizes from the grand and traditional suites to the quaint and cosy doubles. They&#8217;re spread across the main Manor House, the Garden Mews, Racing Mews, Moat Mews and the Royal Lodge which are in the grounds.</p>



<p>There&#8217;s a luxe touch to all the rooms &#8211; beds are all laid with crisp Egyptian cotton linen and pump pillows and you&#8217;ll find fluffy towels in the bathrooms alongside gorgeous TempleSpa toiletries. The Wisley Suite has its own private terrace overlooking the gardens, and the Historic Named Suites have four-poster beds and deep freestanding bathtubs.</p>



<p>I stayed in Savill, one of the Spacious Attic Suites, named after the gardens of Surrey (there&#8217;s also Sissinghurst and Wisley among others) and decorated in bright and bold botanical prints. They&#8217;re lovely big rooms, with a separate dining area and big squashy sofas in the room. Beds are king-sized and super comfy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-kid-friendly-nbsp"><strong>KID-FRIENDLY?&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>Yes. Children are welcome at Langshott Manor and can easily be accommodated in one of the suites or inter-connecting rooms. Cots are available, and some rooms have sofa beds.</p>

<p>Langshott Manor has a choice of dog-friendly bedrooms located in the Racing Mews with easy access to the gardens. Dogs are treated to a comfy bed and two lovely bowls for their dinner, and treats from The Dog House. Dogs are not permitted in the Mulberry Restaurant, but guests can dine in the lounge with their dog or, during the summer, on the terrace. Cost is £40 per stay.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-disability-access"><strong>DISABILITY ACCESS</strong></h2>



<p>Yes, the main restaurant and lounges are on the ground floor and there’s disabled access to public areas and some bedrooms. There is one fully accessible bedroom in the main hotel.</p>

<p>Langshott Manor is not far from the Surrey and Sussex border and an easy drive to the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluebell-railway.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bluebell Railway</a>. Sheffield Park Station is the best place to join the railway.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.denbies.co.uk/">Denbies Wine Estate</a>&nbsp;is just over 10 miles away, and there’s plenty to do there including some lovely walks. Also nearby is <a href="https://www.tulleysfarm.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tulleys Farm</a> which hosts seasonal attractions like the Shocktober Halloween Fest, the Tulip Spring Festival, summer Sunflower Festival and Pumpkin Festival. There are also escape rooms at Tulleys.</p>

<p><strong>Good for:</strong> Romantics, peace seekers and foodies will love Langshott, as will history buffs. It&#8217;s also ideal for those looking for somewhere lovely to stay before or after a Gatwick flight.</p>



<p><strong>Not for:</strong> Langshott is fully of history, charm and character &#8211; if you prefer a modern venue, you won&#8217;t it here. Those seeking a party vibe might also want to look elsewhere. Unless, of coures, you&#8217;re planning your own shindig with a whole-house takeover. </p>



<p><strong>The damage:</strong> The Lovely Langshott Escape, including dinner, bed and breakfast with welcome fizz and high tea, starts at £249. Park and stay is from £210 for a cosy room. In the Mulberry Restaurant starters are £9-£15; mains are £22-£40 and desserts are around £10.  </p>
