<p>This small village at the foot of the North Downs is known for its quintessential English village green, big community spirit, postcard pretty cottages and&#8230; its Bonfire Night celebrations. Surrounded by the beautiful Surrey Hills, Brockham offers a peaceful country lifestyle whilst also having convenient access to larger neighbouring towns as well as London. Yes, you get the best of all worlds! </p>



<p>It&#8217;s tucked away off the A25 between Dorking (1.5 miles) and Reigate (4 miles) and has views of Box Hill in the distance. Said to date back to the Bronze Age, Brockham is home to the pretty Christ Church, and there&#8217;s also a village hall, a café and two pubs. Plus, the River Mole also runs through the village. See, it really does have it all.</p>

<p>In the village itself, you have <a href="https://readingroombrockham.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Reading Room Café</a> (open every day) which serves tea, coffee (from Dorking roasters, Chimney Fire Coffee) plus cakes, bakes, brunch and lunch. It&#8217;s in the Brockham Village Hall on the green. </p>



<p>Also in the Village Hall you&#8217;ll find <a href="https://www.taphousebrockham.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Taphouse</a> &#8211; a welcoming bar serving a range of drinks from real ales and beer to Champagne and cocktails.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.thegrumpymole.co.uk/brockham" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Grumpy Mole</a> in Brockham is a great choice for gastropub fare, or two minutes&#8217; away by car, there&#8217;s Muddy Award finalist <a href="https://www.brunningandprice.co.uk/pheasant/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Pheasant at Buckland</a>. There&#8217;s also <a href="https://www.facebook.com/p/The-Royal-Oak-Inn-and-Meerkat-Retreat-in-Brockham-61566376545026/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Royal Oak Inn and Meerkat Retreat</a> in Brockham, a traditional village pub offering classic pub fare. Oh, and the meerkats are an actual thing &#8211; they live in a purpose-built home in the pub garden. </p>



<p>For fine dining, head two miles into Dorking to Steve Drake’s Michelin-starred <a aria-label="Sorrel (opens in a new tab)" href="https://sorrelrestaurant.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sorrel</a> restaurant. <a href="https://twomanycooks.com/shop-coffee-shops-in-dorking/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mullins Coffee Shop</a> in Dorking, is a good option for brunch, lunch and coffee. Muddy Award 2025 winner, <a href="https://swirlwinebar.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Swirl Wine Bar</a> is also in Dorking, and a lovely spot to catch up for a tipple or two.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shop">SHOP</h2>



<p>Brockham has a handful of shops including a village store, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/chittybutchersbrockham/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">butcher and deli</a>, and convenience store – all great for essentials. The <a href="https://theshopatstroodgreen.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Shop at Strood Green</a> offers wonderful choice of locally produced goods, and there’s also a café. </p>



<p>But for most other things though, head into Dorking where there&#8217;s a lovely choice of high street and independent shops. Every Friday, the <a href="https://www.visitdorking.com/about/traditional-market/">Traditional Market</a> brings together stalls selling unique gifts, arts and crafts, vintage goodies, and food and drink. If you fancy a splurge on top quality intimates, <a aria-label="Victoria's Little Bra Shop (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.victoriaslittlebrashop.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Victoria&#8217;s Little Bra Shop</a> is the place to go.  <a href="https://ayaboutique.clothing/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Aya Boutique</a> in St Martin’s Walk has an eclectic range of women’s fashion,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.westdawmenswear.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Westdaw</a>&nbsp;is excellent for menswear and for country-types, Dorking’s oldest shop&nbsp;<a href="https://www.scfuller.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">S C Fuller</a>&nbsp;in South Street is a must-visit.&nbsp;</p>

<p>For health needs, there&#8217;s <a href="https://www.nhs.uk/services/gp-surgery/brockwood-medical-practice/H81068" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brockwood Medical Practice</a> in Brockham offering a range of services including a GP appointments. There&#8217;s also <a href="https://brockhamgreenpharmacy.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brockham Green Pharmacy</a> offering services like flu vaccinations, blood pressure testing and weight management services. </p>



<p><a href="https://tillowbarnhealth.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tillow Barn Health and Wellbeing</a>, located in beautiful converted barns in private grounds near Brockham Village, offers a range of treatments and therapies including talking therapy, counselling, psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, acupuncture, massage, reiki and crystal therapy. A personal trainer is also based at Tillow Barn, so your fitness needs can be met too. A fitness boot camp, <a href="https://www.brockhamchurch.com/christchurchbootcamp.htm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Christ Church Boot Camp</a> runs year-round on the Village Green (or in the case of really bad weather in the Village Hall). It&#8217;s open to men and women and teenagers (over 12) of all fitness levels. Nutrition and wellness advice is also included.</p>



<p>There are several sports clubs including the <a href="https://www.brockhambadgersfc.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brockham Badgers and Brockham FC</a> for both youth and adult football, and the <a href="https://brockhamgreen.play-cricket.com/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brockham Green Cricket Club</a> which was established in 1875. <a href="https://www.brockhambowlsclub.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brockham Bowls Club</a> in the centre of the village is a friendly and social club with four full-length rinks and a clubhouse. For golfers, <a href="https://www.betchworthparkgc.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Betchworth Park Golf Club</a> is also nearby.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-community">COMMUNITY</h2>



<p>Community is practically Brockham Village&#8217;s middle name. This a tight-knit village with lots going on. As well as the sports clubs, which always bring communities together, the Village Hall is a hub of local activity and lots of local groups make use of it &#8211; from <a href="https://surreyhorticulturalfederation.org/clubs/brockham-green-horticultural-society/">gardening clubs</a> to <a href="https://brockhamchoral.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brockham Choral</a>. </p>



<p>The biggest event on the local calendar is the famous <a href="https://www.brockham.org/brockham-bonfire" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brockham Bonfire</a>, held in November each year and said to the one of the biggest bonfire celebrations in the whole of the UK. </p>

<p><a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/surrey/box-hill" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Box Hill</a> is close by with great views out over the Surrey Hills and plenty of options for those who want to stretch their legs including the iconic&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/box-hill/trails/box-hill-stepping-stones-walk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stepping Stones trail</a>.</p>



<p>Betchworth Castle is a mile away, and while little more than ruins remain today &#8211; the remains date back to 1379. It&#8217;s privately owned, but walking tours are run during the summer months by <a href="https://dorkingmuseum.org.uk/guided-walks-around-dorking/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dorking Museum and Heritage Centre</a>.</p>



<p>Less than 10 minutes in the car and you can visit the family-owned&nbsp;<a href="https://www.denbies.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Denbies Wine Estate</a>, England’s largest vineyard, sitting on 265 acres. There’s plenty to explore here, including walks through the vineyard. There’s a large visitors’ centre as well as two restaurants and a hotel. Regular events are held at the winery, including vineyard tours and tastings, art exhibitions and running events including ParkRun every Saturday.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-culture">CULTURE</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.dorkinghalls.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dorking Halls</a>&nbsp;is a cracking theatre offering a good line up of live theatre, music and comedy, as well as films. But there’s also the hidden gem, The Green Room studio theatre at the rear, home to the Dorking Dramatic and Operatic Society, putting on plays, musicals and reviews.</p>

There&#8217;s also&nbsp;<a href="https://surrey.muddystilettos.co.uk/kids/school-reviews/hawthorns-school-bletchingley/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Hawthorns</a>&nbsp;in Bletchingley and the all-through <a href="https://www.downsend.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Downsend School</a>&nbsp;in Leatherhead. </p>

<p>The <a href="https://theshopatstroodgreen.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Shop at Strood Green</a> is a community-owned store run entirely by volunteers and is at the heart of the village community. All profits go back into the business or are used to benefit the local community. Inside you&#8217;ll find a treasure trove of goodies including fresh meat and fish, local produce and store cupboard essentials. There&#8217;s also a vast choice of locally produced tipples &#8211; from gin and wine to ales and fresh juices.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-commute">COMMUTE</h2>



<p>Dorking station is a couple of miles away. Trains go directly to London Waterloo and take 50 – 60 mins. For fans of the coast, it takes a little over an hour to get to Brighton by train.</p>
