Top places to live in Surrey Oxted

Catnip to city commuters, Oxted is arguably the town with it all - great schools, excellent leisure facilities and a burgeoning music festival scene. Oh, and it's at the foot of the stunning North Downs - so gorgeous to boot!

Oxted is everything you want in an English country town: it’s at the foot of the North Downs, boasts a pretty high street, has an easy train commute to London or nearby Croydon, and is only 20 minutes by car to Gatwick airport. There are also excellent leisure facilities and a brilliant choice of schools, plus the Oxted Beer Fest. No wonder it’s catnip to young families.

Cucina Italian restaurant on the High Street is a big favourite, as are Gurkha Kitchen for Nepalese and Thai Pad for Thai. Head to Cattle and Cocktail for excellent steaks and cocktails and Toast or Papillon for brunch or lunch. The Bull at Limpsfield, just outside Oxted, is one of Muddy’s all-time favourite pubs. For a tipple, we head to The Ginistry or the bar at the Everyman Theatre.

There’s everything you might expect from a commuter town but it’s not the type of place that has tourists flocking to it every weekend. Head to Number 44 for boutique women’s wear and handcrafted jewellery. There’s also Mint Fashions, Jules Boutique and Fusspotts dress agency. Lorimers is a family owned stationery and gift shop.

Godstone Farm, a few miles out of Oxted is an excellent day out for the family. Surrey’s oldest community theatre, The Barn Theatre, hosts shows throughout the year. There’s also the wonderfully decadent arthouse Everyman Cinema (and wine bar) plus the excellent Tandridge Leisure Centre. St Mary’s Church in the town is 1000 years old and worth a visit for the architecture alone.

You’re looking at around £1.1m for a detached family home in Oxted. The average property price in the past 12 months was £723,977.

House for sale, Oxted, Surrey
With six bedrooms and five bathrooms, this house in Oxted is surrounded by about two-thirds of an acre of secluded gardens. It’s for sale through local agent Jackson Stops for £2.85m.

There are some excellent independent schools easily accessible from Oxted including Woldingham School and Croydon High for girls. Caterham School is co-ed and all-through, and Whitgift School and Trinity are excellent options for boys. For juniors, there’s The Hawthorns School near Redhill. Limpsfield CofE School, St Mary’s CofE and St Peter’s CofE schools are all excellent state options. There’s also Oxted School, a state secondary.

The country estate of former Harrods’ owner Mohamed al-Fayed is here, and the tomb of his late son Dodi, who died in the Paris car crash with Princess Diana, are in the grounds.

Oxted Station is in the centre of the town and there are regular trains to London Bridge (33 mins) and London Victoria (39 mins).
