<p>Oxted is everything you want in an English country town: it’s at the foot of the North Downs, boasts a pretty historic high street, has an easy train commute to London or nearby Croydon, and is only 20 mins by car to Gatwick. There are also excellent leisure facilities and a brilliant choice of schools, plus its own music festival. No wonder it’s catnip to young families.</p>

<p>Hungry? You&#8217;re spoiled for choice in Oxted with offerings from around the world. Cucina Italian restaurant on the High Street is a big favourite, as are Gurkha Kitchen for Nepalese and <a aria-label="Thai Pad (opens in a new tab)" href="https://thaipadoxted.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Thai Pad</a>. The Kinjo Japanese, is real hotspot, and <a href="https://hammondswinebar.co.uk/restaurant/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hammond&#8217;s</a> is a popular fine dining spot with a cute courtyard. The glamourous new Mediterranean restaurant and West-End worthy bar, Medora, opened in the former Co-op building on Station Road East in February 2026. </p>



<p>Head to Insta-worthy <a href="https://cattleandcocktail.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cattle and Cocktail</a> for great steaks and fancy tipples, and <a aria-label="Toast (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.toastoxted.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Toast</a> or Bru &amp; Bear for brunch or lunch. <a href="https://thebullinnlimpsfield.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Bull</a> at Limpsfield, on the outskirts of Oxted, is an excellent pub, and the <a href="https://www.thegrumpymole.co.uk/oxted/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Grumpy Mole</a> and <a href="https://www.brunningandprice.co.uk/haycutter/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Haycutter</a> are also a good foodie options. For a tipple, head to popular gin bar <a aria-label="The Ginstry. (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.theginistry.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Ginistry</a> or <a href="https://panyvinooxted.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pan et Vino </a>a lively tapas spot, plus there is a great bar at the stylish Everyman Cinema. </p>

<p>There’s everything you might expect from a commuter town but it’s not the type of place that has tourists flocking to it every weekend. Head to <a href="https://www.instagram.com/number44oxted/?hl=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Number 44</a> for boutique women’s wear &amp; handcrafted jewellery and <a href="https://www.instagram.com/lamaisonoxted/?hl=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">La Maison</a> for fashion and gifts and homewares or A Useful Friend for traditional homeware. There’s also dinky <a href="https://www.instagram.com/mint_oxted/?hl=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mint</a> and <a href="https://jules-boutique.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Jules Boutique</a> for women&#8217;s wear and <a aria-label="Fusspotts (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.fusspotts.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Fusspotts</a> a pre-loved designer agency. <a href="https://lorimers.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lorimers</a> is a family-owned traditional stationery, toy and gift shop.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-health-amp-wellbeing">HEALTH &amp; WELLBEING</h2>



<p>Sporty types are well catered for with a huge number of local teams for adults and kids alike. The town boasts several golf clubs, three football and tennis clubs and a popular cricket club in Master Park. <a href="https://masterparkoxted.org/new-pavilion/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Pavilion</a> hub with café opened in summer 2025. There&#8217;s also a well-equipped gym and pool in Tandridge Leisure centre or if you prefer open-water swimming see our Best Kept secret (below), and head to the idyllic Divers Cove, a beautiful 7.3-acre reservoir just outside town. For yoga or Pilates head to <a href="https://www.ingledale-centre.co.uk/class-timetable/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ingledale Health Centre</a> for classes in a pretty converted barn. They also offer therapies including reflexology, massage and counselling. The newly opened <a href="https://www.backtofitnesssportstherapy.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sports &amp; Wellness Hub</a> next to Waitrose also offers Reformer Pilates.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-community">COMMUNITY</h2>



<p>Oxted has a strong community spirit and sense of fun. The legendary annual charity <a href="https://www.facebook.com/oxtedpramrace/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pram race</a> sees competitors in fancy dress pushing homemade wheeled contraptions around the park and uphill through the old high street. All while being soaked with water pistols! For drier fun there is <a href="https://www.oxtedfest.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Oxted Festival,</a> (2024 saw Ella Henderson and Judge Jules headline), usually in early July, while in nearby Godstone is Flower Farm, home to <a href="https://flower-farm.co.uk/oktoberryfest/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Oktoberryfest</a>.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/limpsfield-common" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Limpsfield Common</a> is a lovely ancient woodland, great for walks &#8211; if you&#8217;ve kids don&#8217;t miss a collection of cute structures built by local volunteers including mouse houses and a stag beetle &#8216;hotel&#8217;. For a full day out <a href="https://surrey.muddystilettos.co.uk/little-black-book/directory/godstone-farm/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Godstone Farm</a>, a few miles out of town is an excellent choice for the family. </p>



<p><a href="https://www.titsey.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Titsey Place and Gardens</a> is an impressive private manor house with beautiful gardens open for visits between May and September. For all year-round history visit Churchill&#8217;s former home at nearby Chartwell or picture-perfect Hever Castle.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">CULTURE</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.barntheatreoxted.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Barn Theatre</a> is Surrey&#8217;s oldest community theatre and hosts shows throughout the year. There’s also the wonderfully decadent arthouse Everyman Cinema. St Mary’s Church in the town is 1,000 years old and worth a visit for the architecture alone (and don&#8217;t miss the rare Soay sheep that live on the land behind).</p>

There&#8217;s also a nursery at <a href="https://www.hazelwoodschool.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hazelwood School</a>.</p>

<p>There are some excellent independent schools easily accessible from Oxted including&nbsp;<a href="https://surrey.muddystilettos.co.uk/kids/school-reviews/woldingham-school-woldingham-surrey/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Woldingham School</a>&nbsp;and <a aria-label="Croydon High (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.croydonhigh.gdst.net/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Croydon High</a> for girls. <a aria-label="Caterham School (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.caterhamschool.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Caterham School</a> is co-ed and all-through, and <a aria-label="Whitgift School  (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.whitgift.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Whitgift School</a> and <a href="https://www.trinity-school.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Trinity School</a> in Croydon are excellent options for boys (from 2027 the is taking girls read our review <a href="https://surrey.muddystilettos.co.uk/school-reviews/trinity-school-croydon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">here</a>). For juniors, there&#8217;s the independent <a href="https://www.hazelwoodschool.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hazelwood School</a> up to Y8. Limpsfield, St Mary&#8217;s and St Peter&#8217;s (all C of E) schools are all popular state options. There&#8217;s also Oxted School, a large state secondary, which is Ofsted rated Good.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-best-kept-secrets">BEST KEPT SECRETS</h2>



<p>Love open water swimming? Just 3 miles out of town is the idyllic Divers Cove a beautiful 7.3 acre reservoir for wild swimming alongside hot tubs and saunas. The country estate of the late Mohamed al-Fayed is also here, and the tomb of his late son Dodi, who died in the Paris car crash with Princess Diana, is in the grounds.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-commute">COMMUTE</h2>



<p>Oxted Station is in the centre of the town and there are regular trains to London Bridge (33 mins) and London Victoria (39 mins).</p>
