Top places to live in Surrey Godalming

A pretty historic market town on the River Wey, with an impressive high street bulging with independents. Part of our Top 200 Places to Live series.


Godalming is a beautiful historic market town just four miles from Guildford. The quaint setting is home to hotels, restaurants, cafes and shopping, with independents thriving on the high street.


For bottomless brunch, stone baked pizza or maybe just a cocktail or three, the Rose & Crown Bar in the centre of the town is the place to head. And it also has rooms if you fancy an overnight stay. If you’re looking for a top high-end pub / restaurant food in a stunning 16th century building, The White Horse in Hascombe is just a stone’s throw away from Godalming – and wine lovers will be happy to know there’s an impressive buy-the-glass wine menu! The Stag on the River is another Muddy fave, situated right on the River Wey just a mile or so out of town in Lower Eashing. There are rooms here too, if you fancy a cheeky overnighter. Head to The Merry Harriers, in Hambledon, for classic country pub food. There’s also llama trekking and shepherd’s huts for something a bit different. The Inn on the Pond in Godalming is another pretty pub worth heading to. Try Cafe Mila if vegetarian food is your kind of thing.


The independent shopping scene is Godalming is a real treat. Rose & Co is a beautiful homeware and lifestyle store, filled to the brim with treasures perfect for a treat to yourself or as a gift. Catwalk Boutique has a gorgeous range of women’s wear, and Cassally is a one-stop-shop for women’s clothing, accessories, homeware and gifts. Looking to shop for food from unique, independent brands? Then you’ll want to head straight to The Godalming Food Company.


Barely three miles away is Winkworth Arboretum, a popular National Trust spot that spans 95 acres and a stunning location for a long walk or perhaps a picnic if the weather allows! If you fancy afternoon tea in the most special of settings, make a booking at Barnett Hill, a 10 minute drive from Godalming.


The average house price in Godalming over the past year was £574,050. Most properties sold over the period were detached, with a mean cost of £868,610. Semi-detached properties sold for an average price of £516,259, and terraced properties cost around £403,822.

For senior schools, Charterhouse is fab, alongside girls’ school Prior’s Field, and coeducational schools and King Edward’s Witley. Guildford schools including RGS for boys, and St Catherine’s and Tormead for girls, are also options for parents. There are several Ofstead-rated Oustanding state schools in Godalming, including Busbridge Infant School, Shalford Infant School and St Mary’s CofE. Broadwater School and Godalming Junior School are both good schools. For secondary, Godalming College is Outstanding.
