Good books and good food – could there be anything better? Well, er, yes there could actually. Add a gin tasting and you’ve got yourself the perfect afternoon! The White Horse in Hascombe is hosting a Literary Lunch on Fri 5 July featuring Surrey-based writers Eleanor Anstruther and Fliss Chester who will each chat about their own paths to publication. Simon Sherlock, from Distillers of Surrey, will also be on hand to chat about gin.
Eleanor’s debut novel, A Perfect Explanation, a fictionalised story about the granddaughter of the eighth Duke of Argyll who sold her son to her sister for £500. It was published in March and is already getting shortlisted for awards. Fliss Chester’s trio of saucy tales concludes with the imminent arrival of Meet Me on the Riviera, which is out on 11 July. It joins Fliss’s first two fun and flirty (and fruity, it has to be said!) novels, Snowballs! Winter Fun On The Slopes and Summer at the Vineyard.
The Literary Lunch includes a three course lunch with wine and a G&T and is £35 per person. Book via The White Horse. Meet Me on the Riviera is available for pre-order here, and A Perfect Explanation is available here. Get Snowballs! here, and Summer at the Vineyard here.

Still on the subject of cooking, only we’ve moved from private chefs to pubs. Muddy was impressed to hear of the apprenticeship scheme at the Surrey-based Red Mist group of pubs which offers chef apprenticeships to help train a new generation of chefs. The scheme is open to anyone, including school leavers, ex-offenders, the homeless and and ex-service men and women. redmistleisure.co.uk
