<p>If you thought Surrey’s country house hotels had given up all their secrets, think again. De Vere Horsley Estate near Leatherhead has just reopened its hidden 19th-century tunnel – and yes, it’s every bit as atmospheric as it sounds.</p>



<p>Set within acres of parkland, the estate is already known for its dramatic Gothic architecture, wedding spaces, historic Horsley Towers mansion and modern hotel. But it’s the tunnel – tucked beneath the grounds – that adds an intriguing twist.</p>



<p>Originally built in the 1800s for trade, the passageway was strictly the domain of servants, used to ferry goods across the estate while remaining firmly out of sight of the Lords and Ladies. Among the estate’s former residents was none other than Ada Lovelace, who called Horsley Towers her marital home and, in between country house life, just happened to write what’s widely considered the world’s first computer algorithm.</p>



<p>Fast forward to the late 1960s and the tunnel took on a more local role, becoming a road access point – with plenty of Surrey residents still reminiscing about childhood adventures spent running, cycling and even driving through it.</p>

<p>An exciting new opening in Cranleigh sees one of the village’s oldest buildings given a stylish new lease of life – reimagined as a brasserie and elegant rooms right in the heart of the Surrey countryside.</p>



<p>The vision of local businessman Nathan Williams – who, fittingly, was born in the village – Cromwell’s Brasserie &amp; Rooms has been lovingly restored to honour its past, while introducing a more contemporary dining experience.</p>



<p>Expect original character in all the right places – think exposed beams, traditional architecture and plenty of heritage charm – paired with a menu and setting that feel firmly rooted in the now. <p>If you’re on the hunt for a Surrey lunch spot that keeps both you <em>and</em> the kids happy (no small feat), make a beeline for the newly revamped Royal Oak in Stonebridge. Think classic country pub charm – but with a side of outdoor playground fun.</p>



<p>Now under new management since early this year, this 200-year-old pub has been pulling pints since the mid-18th century. Parts of the building date all the way back to 1613. So yes, it’s got stories to tell – and now, a fresh new chapter.</p>



<p>The real win? A thoughtfully done children’s play area complete with swings, stepping stones, a slide, sandpit and climbing wall. Add in a pair of resident rabbits, and you’ve got a setup where little ones are happily occupied while you can sit down and enjoy those rolling countryside views – ideally with something cold in hand.</p>

<p>Good news for Surrey coffee lovers – Powers has officially opened its doors on Church Street (handily next to Waitrose), bringing its cult-following deli vibes to a new postcode.</p>



<p>The move comes after the original Powers café sadly closed in December following nine successful years – but it’s not all nostalgia. Their smaller deli in Oatlands Village is still going strong, and this new opening feels very much like the next chapter rather than a full stop.</p>



<p>Expect the same winning formula, with a slightly expanded line-up – think excellent coffee, matcha for the in-the-know, freshly baked goods, plus hot ciabattas and bagels that more than justify a detour. In short, your new go-to for a latte and a little something extra.</p>

<p>Not only has that very pretty pink ice cream parlour on Warlingham Green just been crowned the <em>best in the UK</em> (casual), it looks like there’s more good news on the horizon.</p>



<p>The much-loved gelato destination is gearing up for expansion, with hiring already underway and plenty of teasing happening over on socials about a second Surrey site. Nothing officially confirmed just yet, but word on the street – and we’re inclined to trust it – is that Oxted could be next.</p>

<p>Stuck for ways to prise the teens off their screens? Consider this your answer. Skaterham – the much-loved skate spot set inside a converted church – has just unveiled a brand new outdoor ramp, and it’s landed at exactly the right moment. Already a go-to hangout for skateboarders and scooter fans, the venue has added a small but perfectly formed outside setup, giving riders even more space to practise their moves as the weather warms up. Translation: they’ll be busy, you’ll get some peace.</p>



<p>And it doesn’t stop there. Looking ahead to summer, plans are already underway for a seriously impressive outdoor skatepark at Leg O’Mutton Field, with work now in progress.
